Knife carrying and usage among young people in Queensland is increasing.

In response, the Queensland Government and Queensland Police Service (QPS) has introduced a range of initiatives to keep our communities safe from knife crime. This includes the:

  • Continued roll out of Jack’s Law to increase police wanding powers.
  • Passing the Summary Offences (Prevention of Knife Crime) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024 to restrict the sale and provision of knives and other controlled items to minors - effective from 1 September 2024.

To educate our young people about these new laws and to reduce knife crime in our communities, the QPS has developed the StandUp, knife crime prevention education program, delivered by Queensland Police Officers to high school students across Queensland.

The presentation and educational resources are informed by research to ensure the content delivered is addressing and responding to current trends seen by law enforcement and linked to the Australian Curriculum for year 9 and 10 students.

The StandUp program complements the work of the Jack Beasley Foundation (JBF) and Balin Stewart Foundation (BSF), creating a dual focus and broader reach of knife crime education.
