What's in our education program?

The StandUp education program is approximately 45 minutes in duration.

Over the 45 mins, students move through a brief lesson, which follows the below structure:

1. Introduction

The QPS officer delivering the program will explain how the program will be delivered and provide quick facts and stats about knife crime in Queensland.

2. The Law

A discussion about Queensland’s knife laws and how the laws affect all Queenslanders and students.

3. Emergency Response

A fictional example of a Triple Zero (000) call is used to develop students understanding that they may see a knife crime or be a bystander at any time.

The activity teaches students tips for responding to emergency situations and shows the serious consequences of carrying a knife.

4. Consequences

Students watch a video that highlights the real-world impact of carrying a knife under Queensland’s laws and how these consequences extend beyond legal penalties.

The video storyline highlights the personal, professional, and social consequences of carrying a knife, which provides key learning and discussion points for students.

5. The Ripple Effect

Students take part in a discussion about the Triple Zero call used in teaching module one. Students discuss the breadth of people affected by the knife incident to understand the far-reaching impact of knife violence and dispel the myth that carrying a knife won’t affect them.

6. Choices

Students watch a second video that highlights the power of choice. The video highlights decision-making moments and the importance of supporting friends - being an active bystander. Students discuss the scenario and reflect on this moment of choice, as a key learning point.

7. How to safely report

The QPS officer teaches students about how to safely and anonymously report knife crime.

8. Concluding activity

Students take part in a reflection activity to summarise the learning objectives of the program. The QPS officer reiterates the importance of reporting, safe pathways and of being an upstander and not a bystander.

The StandUp program complements the work of the Jack Beasley Foundation (JBF) and Balin Stewart Foundation (BSF), creating a dual focus and broader reach of knife crime education.
